Interpersonal Writing - Letters in Spanish

Hello, Spanish learners! Let's talk about writing letters in Spanish. Not that we write many letters nowadays, but we do write lots of emails.


So, at first, let's look at a few samples of simple structures related to in formal greetings and comments:

Querida... ¿Qué haría sin ti?

Gracias por tu oferta.

Por fin me puedo relajar un poco.

Mil gracias por tu apoyo.

Hace tiempo que no tengo noticias de ti.

¿Dónde has estado? Hace días que no he oído de ti.

¿Sabes una cosa? Te echo de menos.

Hola, ¿cómo estás? Dime, ¿cuándo propones salir para...?

Querida, mil gracias por haberme comunicado.

Sabía que podía contar contigo.

A more complex structure often uses the subjunctive in a subordinate clause and/or dependent noun clause, or the sentence may contain the infinitive instead of course, but with advanced vocabulary. Look at these:

¡Cuándo me alegro que puedas ayudarme! ¡Eres todo un ángel!              

Querida, mil gracias por haberme mandado un mensaje para ofrecer tu ayuda.

¡Que alivio! No sé qué habría hecho si no te hubieras comunicado conmigo.

No puedes imaginar cuánto me alegro de recibir tu mensaje.

Me emociona que + the subjunctive

Siento mucho que + the subjunctive

Espero que este mensaje te encuentre bien.

For more formal greetings you could use something like the structures listed below. Even business communications begin with a standard opening, such as "I hope this letter finds you well."

Estimado Señor..., espero que este mensaje le encuentre bien.

Saludos, Señor... . Le agradezco mucho por haberme recibido la semana pasada.

Buenos días, Señor ... . Espero que todo este bien con usted.

Saludos, Señor... y muchas gracias por + the infinitive verb form.

Saludos, Doctora... . Espero que no haya inconveniente en + the infinitive verb from.

Licenciado..., le mando mis mejores saludos.

Below are some suggestions for working the subjunctive in to your message. It is easy to use the subjunctive in noun, adjective, and adverb clauses. Learn a few of these to incorporate in to your message:

Dudo que...

Temo que...

Espero que...

No espero que...

No creo que (remember that you use the indicative after Creo que)

Quiero que...

Deseo que...

Me arrepiento que...

Me da lástima que...

Tengo miedo de...

Me molesta que...

Me sorprende que...

Me alegro que...

You can also work the subjunctive in adverbial clauses into the message with any of the following adverbial conjunctions:

...para que

...a menos que

...con tal que

...a no ser que

...sin que

...a fin (de) que

...antes (de) que

For family and friends you could close with one of the following phrases:

Otra vez te agradezco por tu ayuda.

De nuevo, te doy las gracias por ayudarme.

Otra vez, te agradezco por haberme ayudado.

Una vez más, te agradezco y te doy un abrazo fuerte.

Imagínate lo agradecido/a que estoy por todo lo que me has hecho.

Besos y un abrazo fuerte

For a closing for a more formal message you could use something like any of the following responses:

Otra vez, le agradzco por su buena atención al tema.

Permítame darle las gracias por todo lo que ha hecho.

Le doy las gracias por su ayuda y apoyo en el proyecto.

Muchas gracias por todo.

Muchas gracias por su amable atención.

Intentaré comunicarme lo más pronto posible para conducir el asunto.

Cordialmente, su estudiante (su amigo, su vecino, se servidor)

Quedo su atento servidor...
